As if the Bored Ape Yacht Club – and the American Soccer League – didn’t already do everything in their power to get into the spotlight. Major League Soccer (MLS) has offered Bored Ape #6045 called ‘Striker,’ a contract as a striker. The football organisation probably did this for financial reasons.
Ape as striker
Major League Soccer, the biggest football league in the US and Canada, is doing everything it can to become as big as the NBA basketball league. Last year, the National Basketball Association had the innovative idea of selling ‘Top Shots’ as NFTs. These are points scored and recorded on camera. In this way, everyone could become the owner of a point scored.
Now the MLS is trying something similar but different. It is certainly a remarkable ‘acquisition.’ Striker, as the monkey is called, is a Bored Ape NFT who would be the new striker in this football league. This is what the MLS reports on its website about monkey number #6045.
‘Responding to the growing interest of NFTs’
.
According to nftnow, the motivation behind the MLS’s purchase is to “respond to the sports world’s growing interest in NFTs.” But with no description of a real use case, it just looks like an ordinary gamble to ultimately receive more money than the league paid for the NFT.
If you’re in the mood for embarrassing facts and quotes from the monkey, read on. Otherwise, I understand that we — you as a reader and me as a writer — will be saying goodbye to each other here.
Tencrummy facts
“Before Striker was packaged into a virtual athlete, he was simply known as Bored Ape #6045,” reports the nftnow. “Eventually, they picked him up for 100 ETH. This gave the previous owner a hefty profit, as he bought the NFT for just 8.45 ETH in 2021.” This is kind of nice for the previous Bored Ape holder, who got 180,000 euros converted for this.
In addition, the MLS itself posted some quick facts in a row. Including the height, weight, and social media of ‘Striker’:
- Position: striker
- Social media: @striker6045
- Length: 195,5 cm
- Weight: 133 kg
- Hometown: The Blockchain
- Hometown: The Otherside
The monkey will make his first appearance at the MLS All-Star Game on August 10. Striker will join here as the league’s newest player. He will be deployed as a striker, but how this will look in practice is not yet clear.
